Burr Ridge Restaurateur Released on $1M Bond; Attorney Says Capri's 100 Jobs at Risk

Burr Ridge Restaurateur Released on $1M Bond; Attorney Says Capri's 100 Jobs at Risk

Filippo "Gigi" Rovito, owner of Capri Ristorante in Burr Ridge, was released from federal custody Monday under strict conditions after his attorney argued the popular west-suburban restaurant would close without him.

Federal prosecutors in northern Indiana agreed to release Rovito on a $1 million secured bond. He will wear an electronic monitor and remain under home detention but is permitted to leave for work at Capri, located at 324 Burr Ridge Parkway.

Rovito was jailed after a federal grand jury in Hammond indicted him and 21 others in connection with what the FBI calls the "Gerodemos Gambling Organization." He faces charges of operating an illegal gambling business and conspiracy to collect debts by extortionate means.

His attorney, Thomas Breen, told the court that Capri employs roughly 100 workers and would shut down within weeks without Rovito running daily operations. "Vendors do not extend credit to a closed restaurant. A kitchen of that size does not supervise itself," Breen wrote in a court brief.

The indictment alleges the gambling ring operated across several states dating back to 2021. Court records claim a June 2025 meeting at Capri was used to discuss collecting a $30,000 debt from a gambler.

The federal government has said it will seek to seize property derived from illegal gambling proceeds.
