Students at Lyons Township High School are increasingly taking an interest in local civic issues, offering their perspectives on how the community might evolve in the years ahead.

Teachers say encouraging students to engage with their community helps build the next generation of civic leaders. Classroom discussions and student government programs often include conversations about local development, transportation, and environmental sustainability.

“I think young people sometimes see things differently than adults,” said senior Maya Patel. “We’re thinking about what the community will look like in ten or twenty years, not just today.”

Some students have suggested expanding bike infrastructure and pedestrian-friendly spaces around town, noting that many teenagers rely on walking or biking to get around.

Others say they would like to see more gathering spaces where young people can spend time safely outside of school hours.

“La Grange already has a great downtown,” said junior Ethan Ramirez. “But it would be nice if there were more places where students could meet up and hang out.”

Local officials say they welcome input from younger residents and have occasionally invited student representatives to share their ideas during community discussions.
