Village Officials Begin Discussion on Future of West End Parking Lot

La Grange officials have begun early discussions about the future of a parking lot on the west end of downtown that the village recently acquired, a purchase that could shape development in the area for years to come.

Village leaders say the acquisition gives La Grange greater control over how the property might eventually be developed. The site, located near Burlington Avenue and the Metra BNSF rail line, has long been considered a strategic location for redevelopment because of its proximity to downtown shops and commuter rail service.

Trustees have emphasized that no formal redevelopment proposal is currently on the table. Instead, the village plans to spend the coming months studying potential uses and gathering feedback from residents and businesses.

One possibility discussed informally by officials is a mixed-use development that could combine residential units with retail or office space. Similar projects have been built in other suburbs along Metra lines, where commuter access often attracts developers interested in transit-oriented housing.

Another option could include expanding public parking in the area, which some business owners say remains a concern during busy shopping and dining hours downtown.

“Parking is always something we hear about,” said a downtown merchant who asked not to be named. “We want growth in La Grange, but we also need to make sure people can still easily visit downtown.”

Village leaders say any redevelopment would likely involve public meetings and community engagement before plans move forward.

Officials also noted that the purchase could help the village influence development standards, including building design, height, and how new projects fit into the surrounding neighborhood.

For now, trustees say the focus remains on planning rather than immediate construction. But the decision to acquire the property suggests La Grange wants to play a more active role in shaping the future of its downtown.
