LTHS Students Bring Home State Math and National Journalism Honors in Same Weekend

Lyons Township High School students earned a fifth-place finish at the state math championships and a first-place national journalism trophy on the same April weekend, with teams competing simultaneously in two cities more than 300 miles apart.

On Saturday, April 18, the LTHS Pre-Calculus team placed fifth at the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics State Math Championships at Illinois State University in Normal. The six-member squad included Alex Cuckovic, Max Holtz, Andrew Jain, Nate Leonauskas, Alex Matysik, and Andy Sherman. The Oral team, Tess Forde and Andrew Jain, placed 10th. Jain competed on both teams.

The same weekend in Minneapolis, the school's student literary magazine Menagerie took home the National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA) Best of Show first-place trophy at the Journalism Education Association/NSPA National High School Journalism Convention, held April 15–18. The award recognized the 2025 Menagerie as a top publication at the national level.

It wasn't the magazine's only recent honor. In February, the 2025 Menagerie also received the REALM First Class Award from the National Council of Teachers of English, marking the fourth consecutive year the publication earned NCTE's highest recognition.

Individual LTHS students also won JEA National Student Media Contest awards in Minneapolis. Eve Muscato earned a Superior rating for yearbook copy and captions, and Jillian Yates earned Superior for literary magazine layout. Lorelai Brown, Amelia Chomiak, Luke Edwards, and Gillian John each received Excellent ratings in categories ranging from first-year photography to graphic design. Claire Collins, Saoirse Murray, and Mika Patterson earned Honorable Mentions.

The 2025 Tabulae yearbook separately received the "Golden Eagle," the highest honor from the Northern Illinois Scholastic Press Association, at the NISPA convention at the College of DuPage.

Menagerie's literary advisors are Joseph Maffey and Gretchen Kulat, with art advisor Mary Rohlicek.

Both achievements were announced in the LTHS principal's weekly update on April 20.
