If you love of local sports, this is a great week to be a La Grange lacrosse fan.
Two area teams are off to perfect starts this spring. The Lyons Township High School Lions boys varsity lacrosse team and the Nazareth Academy Roadrunners girls varsity lacrosse team are each 3-0-0 through the first weeks of the season. Together, they've outscored their opponents 80–39.
Lions Boys: Ranked 20th in Illinois — and They've Already Won a Thriller
The Lions haven't just won three games. They've earned them.
Led by head coach Charlie Kidder, LTHS opened the season on the road at Lockport Township on March 19, coming away with an 8–6 win. Two days later, the Lions came home and took care of Neuqua Valley 11–5 on March 21.
Then came the game of the young season. On March 24, the Lions hosted Marist — and it came down to the very last moment. LTHS and the RedHawks were locked in a tight battle all the way through regulation before the Lions finally pulled ahead in overtime to win 14–13.
Through three games, the Lions have scored 33 goals and allowed just 24. That's good enough for a ranking of 19th in Illinois and 92nd in the USA Midwest on laxnumbers.com.
Up next: The Lions host Waubonsie-Metea Co-Op on Tuesday, April 7 at 7:00 PM. Come out and cheer them on.
Roadrunners Girls: 8th in Illinois — and Absolutely Dominant
If the Lions have been exciting, the Nazareth Academy Roadrunners have been downright unstoppable.
Coach Ryan Springer's squad opened the season on March 21 with a road trip to Montini Catholic, winning 17–6. The Roadrunners then came home on March 27 and topped Fenwick 15–4, dropping the Friars to 2–2 on the season.
Most recently, on March 31, Nazareth hosted St. Laurence and won 15–5 — capping a three-game stretch in which the Roadrunners outscored their opponents 47–15. That's a goal differential of plus-32. In three games.
That kind of dominance has the Roadrunners ranked 8th in Illinois and 30th in the USA Midwest.
Up next: The Roadrunners host Glenbard West on Monday, April 13 at 4:30 PM, then travel to St. Viator on Wednesday, April 15 at 6:30 PM.
One More Date to Circle: May 7
Girls lacrosse fans will want to mark May 7 at 6:00 PM on their calendars. That's when the LTHS Lions girls varsity team — currently 1-1-1 and ranked 14th in Illinois, coached by Morgan Gallagher — travels to Nazareth Academy for what could be one of the area's best matchups of the spring.
Spring lacrosse is just getting started — and both the Lions and the Roadrunners look like teams worth watching all the way to the end.
