On Friday, June 5, the calendar date 6/05/26 aligns perfectly with the village's 60526 zip code — a once-in-a-lifetime coincidence that local organizations have spent months turning into a full day of community celebration.

A zip code worth celebrating

"It's a fun way to celebrate everything that makes La Grange Park really special," said Maggie Jarr, deputy village manager and one of the key organizers behind 60526 Day. "La Grange Park is one of the few communities in the area with its own zip code, and 60526 Day is really about recognizing the strong sense of identity and community that comes with that."

That identity runs deep. When the U.S. Postal Service once studied consolidating the La Grange Park post office, residents pushed back and held onto 60526. Now the zip code is getting its own holiday.

Community-wide effort

The celebration is the result of months of collaboration among the Village and a variety of businesses including the Library and Chamber of Commerce. The Village launched a dedicated website, 60526.day, as a central hub for the full schedule.

"Everyone kind of took their little piece of what they could do and ran with it," said Patrick Smith, president of the La Grange Park Chamber of Commerce, who designed the event's logo and is spearheading a shop-local campaign tied to the day. Participating businesses will offer QR codes that let shoppers enter a sweepstakes — and stopping by the post office for a selfie earns a bonus entry. The Chamber also produced a limited run of 200 commemorative 60526 coins, available at the event.

Getting Outside

The day kicks off early, with the Park District leading a 2.6-mile community walk starting at 7 a.m. at Community Park Fitness. From there, residents can follow an "Explore 60526" passport tour through the village's neighborhood parks, collecting stamps along the way. At 10 a.m., the Village will host a tree identification walk with regional conservation group Openlands, departing from Village Hall. Jarr described the residents' deep connection to La Grange Park's natural landscape.

For those who prefer to explore on their own schedule, a 26-item nature scavenger hunt through the Forest Preserves will be available for pickup at Village Hall, along with supplies for a self-led litter cleanup.

The library’s contributions

The Library is contributing several activities, including what may be the most delicious: "60526 Cooks," a free digital community cookbook assembled from roughly 30 recipes submitted by residents and local business owners. The idea grew out of the Library's monthly Cookbook Club, when director Gabe Oppenheim noticed attendees paging through old Friends of the Library cookbooks from the 1980s and 1990s.

"We have a nice mix of family recipes, potluck favorites, and the like," Oppenheim said. The Library is also offering mini jigsaw puzzles featuring the 60526 Day logo — cut from cardboard using the Library's laser cutter — for kids and others to decorate. At 4:30 p.m., the Library will co-host a book swap with the Forest Preserves at 26th Street Woods.

An evening to remember

The day wraps up at Memorial Park, where an amphitheater talent show called "Stars of 60526" will run from 5 to 9 p.m., featuring local bands and performers. Alongside it, a "Battle of the Parks" field competition will pit neighborhood parks against each other, with winning teams earning bragging rights and a plaque at their home park. Food trucks and other vendors are expected on site.

Smith said he hopes the evening draws hundreds of families. "I'm hoping families come out and have a good time and enjoy the summer — and celebrate the uniqueness of La Grange Park," he said.

It is the kind of party a zip code deserves.
